Banff’s famous grizzly, ‘The Boss,’ makes first appearance of spring

In a sure sign of spring, Banff National Park’s legendary grizzly bear, known as The Boss, has woken up from his slumber.

One of Banff’s most well-known bears was spotted out and about this week, prompting a reminder from Parks Canada to be safe and aware while in the wild this spring and summer.

Parks Canada confirmed that a large male grizzly (grizzly bear 122) – known as The Boss – was spotted in the Lower Bow Valley on April 7.

A shot of the bear was captured on a trail camera after a long winter of hibernating.

“Bears are awake and active in Banff National Park. Bear activity will begin to increase within the national park, as spring arrives,” Parks Canada said in an emailed statement.

Area closures may be implemented in the park as needed during times of increased wildlife activity.

Parks Canada is encouraging visitors to be alert and respect wildlife while in the national park.

To stay safe while in bear country, Parks Canada provided the following tips:

• Make noise to let bears know you’re in the area, including calling out, clapping, singing or talking loudly;
• Always carry bear spray, keep it accessible and know how to use it;
• Watch for fresh bear signs, like tracks, droppings, diggings, torn-up logs and turned-over rocks;
• Keep dogs on a leash;
• Hike in large groups of four or more;
• Stay on officially marked trails and only travel during daylight; and
• If you see a large dead animal, leave the area and report it to park staff.
