Alberta RCMP say a large amount of GHB believed to be connected to organized crime was seized during a traffic stop on Highway 1 earlier this month. Members of the RCMP roving traffic unit stopped a vehicle east of Calgary just after 8 a.m. on April 22, during which time Mounties say “indicators consistent with drug possession” were observed. Upon investigation, officers discovered 250 litres of suspected GHB concealed in the vehicle. “GHB is a potent central nervous system depressant,” RCMP explained in a Thursday news release. “It is sometimes referred to as a date-rape drug, and is also abused as a recreational club drug.” Mounties say the quantity seized is estimated to be between 60,000 and 250,000 individual doses, with a street value between $300,000 and $750,000. A 50-year-old Ontario man was arrested and charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking. He is scheduled to return to court on June 11. Investigators believe the drugs were going to be taken to major urban centres, including Toronto and Ottawa.
