Airports urge Calgarians to remember ‘no drone zones’ this summer

Drone pilots in the Calgary area are being reminded of the rules involving the devices, especially as air traffic ramps up this summer.

In a release Tuesday, the Calgary Airport Authority said the Calgary International Airport and Springbank Airport are both ‘no drone zones.’

That means drones are not allowed within 6.5 kilometres of the centre of the airport – or 3.5 nautical miles.

Drones are not permitted withing 1.8 kilometres or one nautical mile of any helipad.

Officials say that even small drones pose a risk to aircraft and airport operations.

“A single drone sighting can delay or divert flights, shut down runways and lead to costly investigations,” said Chris Dinsdale, president and CEO of the Calgary Airport Authority, in a statement.

“We’re asking everyone to be mindful of the no drone zones to help us keep our skies safe for our guests, passengers, staff and communities.”

Anyone caught illegally flying a drone too close to an airport or helipad could face a fine of up to $3,000 and even possible jail time.

Calgary police have a dedicated team to investigate these violations and help prosecute pilots.

“In the past, we have had to issue fines to Calgarians who were found to be operating drones illegally, and within restricted airspace, causing significant disruptions,” said Patrol Sgt. Dallas Grimm.

“While we recognize drones are a great tool for both professional and personal use, we are reminding Calgarians of the rules that are in place for everyone’s safety.”

Unauthorized drone activity should be reported to the CPS non-emergency line at 403-266-1234.
