AGLC seizes 162 kilos of cannabis with estimated street value of $1.5M

On April 30, AGLC investigators seized 162 kilograms of illegal cannabis with an estimated street value of $1.5 million

More than 162 kilograms of cannabis were seized by members of the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission (AGLC) at a southeast Calgary home on April 30.

The estimated street value of the cannabis, which investigators determined was intended for illegal online sales, was around $1.5 million.

Two B.C. residents were arrested at the home in the Dover community and then released following the execution of a search warrant.

Charges are pending related to the Cannabis Act and the criminal code.

“This initial seizure underscores AGLC’s firm commitment to addressing the illegal online cannabis market,” said AGLC chief regulatory officer Dave Berry, in a media release. “We are committed to a coordinated illegal cannabis enforcement program in Alberta to uphold the integrity of the legal cannabis framework in the province.”

Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, described illegal cannabis sales as a threat to public safety that undermines law-abiding businesses.

“That’s why in 2024, the government granted AGLC the authority to investigate these operations,” Nally added, “and we are incredibly pleased with the work of their investigative unit.

“Their efforts are making a real difference in holding illegal sellers accountable and protecting Albertans.”

Albertans are encouraged by the AGLC to choose safe, legal options when buying cannabis to protect themselves from illegal products or exposing themselves to the possibility of becoming victims of crimes such as identify theft or financial information theft.

Legal cannabis has a Canadian Universal THC symbol and has an un-tampered excise stamp. It comes in plain packaging, so if it’s visually appealing, it’s not legal.

To determine whether a website is legal, check for an Alberta address and phone number, information on product recalls, CannabisSense banners, a 30g limit per transaction and 10mg THC limit per edible package.

It should also only ship in Alberta.
