WestJet has announced it will be flying more snowbirds south this winter, as it increases its flights to Florida and Mexico.

Weekly flights between the P.E.I. capital and central Florida will begin in December, WestJet announced in a statement issued Monday.

Flights between Kitchener, Ont. and Orlando will also be offered during the colder months. The weekly routes will run from mid-December to late April, the airline said.

"WestJet continues to enhance its strong position in key sun markets with the addition of more destinations in areas popular with Canadian travellers," WestJet Vice President Chris Avery said in the statement.

In addition to the direct flights to Orlando, the airline announced an increase in frequency of flights to other Florida cities. Starting in December, passengers will be able to fly directly between Toronto and Sarasota, as well as West Palm Beach, twice weekly, without a layover at New York's LaGuardia Airport.

At the same time, the Calgary-based airline will introduce weekly service between Toronto and the Mexican cities of Huatulco, Merida, and Cabo San Lucas.

Starting in March, the airline will also run non-stop flights between Toronto and Boston three times a day. There will also be a daily flight between Halifax and Boston starting in April.

In the west, WestJet will begin service between Edmonton and Hawaii on Dec. 11. Flights will be offered between Vancouver and Orlando once a week, starting in January.

Also starting this winter, flights between Calgary and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Calgary and Huatulco, Mexico will be available twice weekly. Flights to Liberia, Costa Rica, will be increased from twice to four times per week.
