TD Bank was hit Thursday by an unexpected service disruption, preventing customers from accessing its online and mobile banking services for several hours.

A statement from spokesperson Barbara Timmins called it a “distributed denial of service,” meaning there was a “flood of traffic directed at a website.”

Timmins indicated the bank was the target of an external cyber-attack that caused its system to go down.

Later in the afternoon, the bank tweeted that service had been “largely restored.”

However, the bank said business customers might still be unable to access their online accounts.

“Someone from outside the bank” was responsible for the attack but it was not known who, Timmins said in the statement.

TD assured its clients that customer information remains secure and not been compromise as a result of the disruption. ATMs, telephone banking and walk-in banking were also not affected, although there could be some delays for phone banking.

The bank said it is working diligently to get all services restored to normal.

TD has some 9 million online customers and $818 billion in assets.
