Germanwings and Lufthansa airlines have darkened the images on their Twitter accounts after a Germanwings plane crashed in the French Alps Tuesday.

The Germanwings Airbus A320, carrying 150 people, crashed in a remote area of the French Alps near a ski resort Tuesday, authorities said. Germanwings is the budget carrier of Lufthansa.

The Duesseldorf-bound plane left Barcelona at 9:55 a.m., and sent out a distress signal at about 10:45 a.m., before crashing, the French Interior Ministry said.

France's president warned that no survivors are expected to be found, as search and rescue teams made their way to the remote crash site.

Hours after the crash, both Lufthansa and Germanwings darkened their Twitter account background images.

Other airlines have also taken steps in the past to change their social media account images after crashes.

Following the crash of flight MH370 last year, Malaysia Airlines posted an image to their Twitter profile of a simple twisted ribbon with the words #alwaysinMyHeart next to it.
