S&P/TSX composite up more than 200 points, U.S. stock markets also higher

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was up more than 200 points in late-morning trading, helped by strength in the financial and technology sectors, while U.S. stock markets also moved higher.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 224.46 points at 35,417.12.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 355.65 points at 52,067.30. The S&P 500 index was up 42.29 points at 7,450.59, while the Nasdaq composite was up 7.90 points at 25,145.59.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.02 cents US compared with 71.01 cents US on Thursday.

The September crude oil contract was down US$2.81 at US$89.38 per barrel.

The August gold contract was up US$22.00 at US$4,072.20 an ounce.
