For many Canadians, hockey is more than just a sport, it’s a passion, and that’s what inspired two students from Collingwood to create a documentary about the growth of professional women’s hockey. The unique film, titled ‘It’s Been a Long Time Coming,' was produced by Toronto Metropolitan University media production students Emma May Beckett and Rylee Cawthorne. It explores how the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) has impacted players, coaches and parents involved with the Toronto Leaside Wildcats - one of the largest and most well-recognized female hockey organizations in Ontario. “We want to bring more exposure to the PWHL, and other women’s professional sports in general,” said Beckett. “We hope that the PWHL is just a stepping stone for other professional womens sports.” Cawthorne echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the dedication of female athletes. “I think what sets women apart is the drive. I think women now have somewhere to go and they will be pushing themselves way harder.” The documentary will have two screenings at the Simcoe Street Theatre in Collingwood on March 29.
