Barrie police say a stolen SUV was recovered in Toronto more than two weeks after it was taken from a north-end driveway in the early morning hours. Officers were called to a home on Livingstone Street West on Sept. 7 after a homeowner was awakened by his car alarm around 4:30 a.m. Police say he watched as his SUV was backed out of the driveway and sped off. According to police, surveillance video showed two masked suspects approaching the vehicle and investigators say one of them smashed a rear window while the other used a handheld scanning device. Police say the suspect who broke the window then got inside and drove away. The SUV was found on Tuesday this week by Toronto police officers, it will now be tested for forensics. Barrie police say the case is part of a broader investigation being run by the joint Barrie-South Simcoe Police Crime Auto Theft Unit. Police remind vehicle owners to take extra precautions, including installing aftermarket security systems, GPS trackers, immobilizers or locks on the vehicle’s onboard diagnostic port. No arrests have been made. The investigation remains ongoing.
