Police working to take impaired and stunt drivers off local roads

One impaired driving charge and two stunt driving charges: South Simcoe Police cracked down on dangerous driving behaviour over the long weekend.

On Saturday night police pulled over a red Ford Taurus on Webster Avenue. After detecting a strong smell of alcohol, police seized two opened beverages and took breath samples from the driver.

A 28-year-old Barrie man was charged with various impaired charges, in addition to driving while under suspension and driving without insurance.

The driver’s licence has been suspended, and his vehicle impounded. The accused is scheduled to appear in court.

Late Monday morning, police stopped a driver travelling 105 kilometres per hour in a 60 km/h zone on Yonge Street. A 43-year-old Barrie man was charged with stunt driving. His licence was suspended for 30 days, and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days.

Later in the day, a 23-year-old Innisfil man was charged with stunt driving for travelling 138 km/hr in a 80 km/h zone on Sideroad 20. His licence was suspended for 30 days, and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days.

The South Simcoe Police Traffic Unit responds to serious collisions including fatal and life-threating crashes, with speeding and excessive speed identified as key contributing factors.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility, and we all have a role to play in protecting our communities. Never drive impaired and always follow posted speed limits - lives depend on it,” the press release said.
