A rare Great Grey Owl has been spotted in the Barrie area, drawing crowds to the unusual sighting. The owl, recognized by a local rescue group as a rare sight in Simcoe County, has attracted a lot of attention from residents and birdwatchers alike. The volunteer-powered rescue, Simcoe County Emergency Animal Response, said it has received reports of people approaching the owl closely to take photos. “While taking photos is absolutely okay, it’s important to do so from a safe and respectful distance,” stated volunteers with the rescue. The group noted that Great Grey Owls rely on silence and stillness to hunt their food. Using their exceptional hearing, they can track down small mammals beneath the snow. “When people get too close, move suddenly, or surround the bird, it can disrupt these hunting behaviours, causing stress and preventing the owl from feeding properly,” said volunteers. The rescue team is asking the public to admire the owl from afar, avoid approaching it, and give it space. “Respecting wildlife means allowing animals to behave naturally,” shared volunteers at Simcoe County Emergency Animal Response. “By keeping our distance, we help ensure this remarkable owl can continue to hunt, rest, and move on safely.”
