The next time you park your vehicle, take a second to lock it. That’s all it takes. A home security camera alerted Barrie police as it captured visuals of an individual checking the door handles of several vehicles around 5 a.m. in the area of Bellevue Crescent in Barrie’s east end. Police don’t believe anything was taken, but are reminding others to lock their car/pickup/SUV doors, too. When someone walks through a parking lot or neighbourhood, and pulls on a few door handles, if one opens, they take a look inside, and take what they want. No broken windows, no forced entry. An unlocked vehicle can mean quick access to wallets, electronics, garage door openers, personal information, and other belongings. Tips to make a difference: Lock it every time: Even if you’re only running inside for a minute or parking in your own driveway overnight. Take your valuables with you: Don’t leave cash, wallets, phones, electronics or shopping bags in plain view. Keep your garage door opener out of sight: An opener left inside an unlocked vehicle could provide access to your home. Don’t leave spare keys in your vehicle: This includes keys to your home or other vehicles. Close your windows: A locked door doesn’t stop thieves if a window is left open. Double-check before walking away: Get into the habit of checking your doors, especially when parking at home or in busy public lots. Residents are asked to report suspicious activity. If they see someone walking through a parking lot or residential neighbourhood checking vehicle door handles, don’t approach them. Police ask residents to take note of their appearance, direction of travel, and any vehicle information, and contact police – even if nothing was stolen.
