Provinces aims to restore ‘80 FIFA World Cup’ sized soccer fields to nature

Dufferin County spend funds on 15 projects on 136 acres of wetlands across the Lake Ontario watershed.

The Province of Ontario says it’s on a mission to restore 36 acres of wetlands across Ontario.

According to the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, that equates to 80 FIFA World Cup-sized soccer pitches.

“Wetlands are vital natural infrastructure that protect our homes and businesses against drought and flooding, clean the water and create habitat for a variety of wildlife,” said Todd McCarthy, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, at an announcement yesterday in Dufferin county.

The investment in restoration is valued at over $3 million. The funding is part of a larger $9.6 million investment through the province’s Wetlands Conservation Partner Program.

The province will be partnering with wetland conservation organization Ducks Unlimited during its efforts on 15 restoration projects across the Lake Ontario watershed.
