Police called after lunch-hour fight erupts outside Barrie high school

A lunch hour fight erupted at a south-end Barrie high school Tuesday, drawing a police response but no lockdown, according to school officials.

Administrators at Bear Creek Secondary School notified police after a physical altercation between students took place outside during lunch period.

Police said they attended the school located on Red Oak Drive and searched for those involved.

In an email obtained by CTV News, the Simcoe County District School Board said the police presence was precautionary and there was no ongoing threat.

“There was not a hold and secure or lockdown and police indicated there was no threat to the school community. The school day proceeded as scheduled,” wrote Sarah Kekewich, Manager of Communications and Strategic Priorities with the Simcoe County District School Board.

The high school’s principal also notified families about the incident in an email, emphasizing student safety.

“I want you to know that we will always take whatever precautions are necessary to keep our students and staff safe. I’m proud of the way our students handled the situation today, and I thank Barrie Police for their support,” Principal Hailey McLean wrote to families.

The school board added that it is aware of the commentary on social media; however, at this time none of those details have been verified by police or through the school investigation.

Paramedics were not required in this incident.
