Pair impersonating bylaw officers target senior in parking lot scam, town warns

The Town of Gravenhurst is warning the public about a daring parking lot scam involving two people who allegedly posed as bylaw officers in an attempt to shake down a senior for cash.

Officials say the incident happened last Monday in the Giant Tiger parking lot, where a man and a woman, both dressed in civilian clothing, approached an elderly driver and claimed he was parking illegally in an accessible spot.

Municipal officials say the duo demanded a $300 fine.

According to the town, the situation escalated when the man reportedly attempted to get the senior to get out of his vehicle. The driver refused and instead showed his valid accessible parking permit.

The town says an exchange of words took place, all while the suspicious woman took photos of the vehicle. The pair then left the area.

The town says the incident has been reported to Ontario Provincial Police.

Municipal officials are warning residents to stay alert and remember that legitimate bylaw officers follow strict protocols.

The town reminds the community that officers are always in uniform, drive clearly marked Town of Gravenhurst vehicles, carry ID, and never request money.
