Ont. man battling terminal cancer, accused of wife’s murder granted bail

Ranjit Singh Cheema, 44, Adjala-Tosorontio man accused of second-degree murder following the death of his wife, has been released from jail after a bail review.

An Adjala-Tosorontio, Ont. man accused of second-degree murder following the death of his wife in their home in November, has been released from jail following a bail review.

44-year-old Ranjit Singh Cheema was granted bail to four loved ones who pledged $370,000 to secure his release under strict house arrest conditions that include Cheema wearing a GPS ankle monitor.

Cheema had been behind bars since Nov. 18, when provincial police revealed he was charged with second-degree murder in the death of his wife, Sukhdeep Kaur Cheema, 41, inside their home following a ‘suspicious death’ investigation.

The ruling, by Justice Donna Kellway, came following several days of witness testimony in a Barrie courtroom.

Neighbours told CTV News, Cheema, his wife, their teenage son and the family’s grandparents all lived in the home for about a year. Cheema, according to neighbours, was undergoing treatment following several cancer surgeries.

Police have not revealed how Sukhdeep Cheema died or why it took investigators three days to charge the accused with murder.

Evidence heard during Cheema’s bail review is protected by a publication ban.

Cheema is scheduled to return to a virtual courtroom in Bradford in a week. The allegations against the accused have not been tested in court.
