Ont. man accused of dangerous driving causing deaths of Midland couple waives preliminary hearing

An Orillia, Ont. man accused of dangerous driving causing the deaths of an elderly Midland couple has waived his preliminary hearing.

Spencer Fulton, 31, stepped into the prisoner’s box Friday morning ahead of what was scheduled to be the start of his preliminary hearing in Collingwood. Instead, Fulton was in a Barrie plea court to waive his preliminary hearing and go directly to the Superior Court of Justice.

His defence lawyer Peter Kott, of Mor Fisher LLP, scheduled a judicial pretrial appearance in June to determine what happens next in the case.

In March 2025, Fulton was charged by Ontario provincial police with two counts of dangerous driving causing death in a head-on three-vehicle crash that killed 80 and 77-year-old Larry and Linda King.

The couple from Midland had deep roots in Southern Georgian Bay. Police confirmed the couple died on scene of their injuries. Investigators said two others involved in the crash were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and another person was sent to a trauma centre in Toronto. According to police, the crash happened Feb. 8, 2025 just before noon along County Road 27 between Baseline Road and Flos Road 11 East.

Court records obtained by CTV News reveal Fulton also has about a dozen charges, including being accused of driving while prohibited. Any evidence heard in court is protected by a publication ban. Fulton next appears in a Collingwood case management court in April.

The allegations against Fulton not been tested in court.
