New traffic safety initiative targets high-risk areas across Barrie

Barrie police have launched a new traffic safety initiative designed to reduce the number of collisions involving pedestrians and cyclists.

The initiative, called Project LIMA, focuses on high-risk areas across the city, especially during the winter months when snow, ice and poor visibility can make roads even more dangerous.

How it works? It combines targeted enforcement under the Highway Traffic Act with public education. Police say they are concentrating on areas identified through collision data and traffic analysis, like the Bayfield Street corridor, downtown near Dunlop Street, and the Yonge Street and Big Bay Point Road area.

Front-line officers and members of the Traffic Unit will be ramping up patrols in these safety zones while also working to raise awareness.

“Project LIMA is about using data to focus our efforts where the risk is highest,” said Barrie Police Chief Rich Johnston. “By combining enforcement with education, we’re working to improve safety for everyone who uses our roads, particularly pedestrians and cyclists.”

Drivers are reminded by police to clear all snow and ice from their vehicles in the winter months, make sure headlights are working, slow down in poor weather conditions and avoid distractions.

Police also encourage drivers to use lights and reflective gear and follow all traffic laws. Pedestrians are advised to stay visible and use marked crossings.

Officials note the initiative is part of an effort to improve road safety through prevention and shared responsibility.
