The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) announced on Thursday that additional exposure sites have been identified in relation to a confirmed measles case that was reported on Wednesday. According to the SMDHU, the confirmed case was a resident who was unvaccinated and recently travelled internationally. Anyone who was at the following sites on Thursday, March 27 during the indicated times may have been exposed. - CIBC at 23 Mapleview Drive West in Barrie from 2:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. - Walmart at 45 Mapleview Drive West in Barrie from 2:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. - Fika Cannabis at 33 Mapleview Drive West, Unit C007 in Barrie from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. - Rexall Pharmacy at 567 Essa Road in Barrie from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Those who may have been exposed are advised by the SMDHU to take their recommended precautions. The precautions include monitoring for potential measles symptoms (which begin 7 to 21 days after exposure), confirming vaccination statuses of household members, and preparing to isolate if symptoms develop. Those who are unprotected are advised to contact their health care provider regarding vaccination. The SMDHU reminds locals that measles is highly contagious through airborne transmission. While many who get sick can recover without treatment, the disease could be more severe in young children, pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals.
