Freezing rain and snow hits Central Ontario on first day of spring

Whether you want winter weather in spring, you're going to get it next week.

If your morning commute felt more like a skating rink than a drive, you’re not alone.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement along with a freezing rain warning on the first day of spring, bringing a messy mix of snow, ice pellets, and freezing rain through the morning.

Areas including Barrie, Collingwood, Orillia, Bracebridge, and Parry Sound are expected to see up to five centimetres of snow or ice pellets, along with a risk of freezing rain.

The national weather agency says the system began early in the morning and is expected to taper off by the afternoon.

Further south, Innisfil, New Tecumseth, and Angus, conditions could be more hazardous, with freezing rain expected to create ice build-up of two to five millimetres.

Experts say temperatures should climb above freezing later in the morning.

Environment Canada says roads and sidewalks are expected to be icy and slippery, increasing the risk of crashes and delays.
