Man, 53, charged following theft of copper and tools worth up to $40K: OPP

A Trout Creek man, 53, is facing several charges for stealing copper and tools with a value of tens of thousands of dollars, according to police.

Police said there were two instances of theft.

Following an investigation, authorities said they found that the man had stolen 280 metres of Bell copper cable, valuing between $20,000 and $40,000 from the Pickard Construction yard on Stephenson Road 12 in Huntsville in the early morning hours on Dec. 27.

The Bracebridge detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said it received a report of a theft at the Home Depot on Depot Drive in Bracebridge on Sept. 5 at around 2:45 p.m. Employees of the store reported the theft to total $5,455, according to police.

The man was charged with two counts of theft over $5,000, two counts of failure to comply with probation, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime and mischief.

The accused is expected to appear in court at a later date.

Bracebridge OPP and Huntsville OPP teamed up with the Muskoka Community Street Crime Unit to carry out the investigation.
