The days of racing around the oval at Innisfil’s iconic racing venue are in the dust, and now headlights are speeding towards its future. A public meeting is being held tonight at Town Hall to consider redevelopment plans for the former Sunset Speedway property located on Yonge Street. The racetrack officially closed in September after being in operation for nearly six decades. The proposal sees the historic short-track oval replaced with a large self-storage complex, including more than 1,200 units across 18 buildings, along with outdoor storage and future commercial space. It also includes preserving a woodlot on the western side of the area while rezoning much of the site for rural commercial and business park use. If the plan goes ahead, the former NASCAR-sanctioned motorsports facility - which hosted racing events since 1968 - could see a major land use shift. Wednesday night’s meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and will be held in the council chambers.
