Here’s what to do with expired or unused pills, tablets or other medications

Do you know how to safely dispose of expired or unused pills, tablets, or other medications?

Leaving old meds in cabinets or cupboards can have unintended and potentially serious consequences, that’s according to Grey Bruce Public Health officials.

“Trends suggest rising rates of recreational misuse of prescription drugs by youth, who often obtain these drugs from family medicine cabinets and friends,” stated the Grey Bruce Public Health in a Monday release. “In addition, people may inadvertently take expired prescription medications if these drugs are not promptly removed from medicine cabinets. This can cause potentially dangerous interactions with other medications.”

The local health unit has partnered with the Owen Sound Attack and Rexall Pharma Plus to raise community awareness on the proper ways to dispose of old prescriptions.

“All pharmacies accept old or unused medications year-round to ensure they are disposed of properly, safely, and will not get into the wrong hands,” continued Grey Bruce Public Health

People can drop off their no-longer-needed supplies at Rexall Pharma Plus on 963 2^nd Avenue East in Owen Sound.

When you bring in your medication, you will receive a voucher for a free ticket to any regular season Owen Sound Attack home game.

“The goal of this campaign is to remind residents to always return old and unused prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicine to their local pharmacy for safe disposal,” said Monica Blair, manager of GBPH’s Harm Reduction Program.

Health officials emphasize that pharmaceuticals can also be harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly.
