The local health unit asks residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites as West Nile virus continues to circulate throughout the region during the summer months. Mosquitoes can spread the virus after feeding on infected birds. While health officials say the risk of infection is highest in late summer, residents are reminded to take simple precautions now. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) recommends using an insect repellent approved in Canada, wearing long sleeves, pants and a hat when mosquitoes are most active. It’s also best to remove standing water around homes to prevent possible breeding. Experiencing these symptoms? Health officials say most people infected with West Nile virus do not become sick. However, some may develop symptoms like a fever, severe headache, muscle weakness, stiff neck, confusion or sensitivity to light. In rare cases, the virus can cause serious neurological illness. SMDHU urges anyone experiencing symptoms to seek medical care. The health unit says it will continues to monitor mosquito activity across Simcoe Muskoka by trapping and testing them and checking for larvae.
