Sights are set on summer, but in Collingwood, don’t plan to enjoy the sunshine with a pint in hand in public outdoor spaces. The Town’s council committee has decided to not permit ‘Bring-Your-Own’ events, following a review and community consultation. The decision comes despite new provincial rules that come into effect April 30. Under the change from the government, adults 19 years of age and older will be allowed to bring their own booze to outdoor events, as long as the municipality along with the Alcohol Gaming Commissions of Ontario has signed off on it. Deputy Mayor Tim Fryer cites concerns around public safety, enforcement, health risks, and costs leading to the decision not to opt in to the new rule. For now, alcohol will continue to be permitted only at licensed venues or approved events with proper permits in Collingwood. Town staff say they will continue to monitor the province-wide change moving forward to see if their stance changes in the future.
