City scraps 25-year NYE tradition for new family-friendly event

The City of Barrie’s long-running tradition of ringing in the New Year with a late-night concert outside City Hall is coming to a close.

The City of Barrie’s long-running tradition of ringing in the New Year with a late-night concert outside City Hall and a midnight fireworks finale is officially coming to a close, according to a new staff memorandum.

The staff memo states the former ‘Downtown Countdown’ format is being retired.

For 25 years the event has drawn thousands and featured major Canadian acts, children’s performers, local musicians and dual fireworks displays, including a midnight show that became a signature highlight. City staff confirm this type of large-scale concert event will not be returning to ring in 2026.

Instead, staff say the city is “elevating the experience” and shifting to a more family-focused celebration at a new location - Meridian Place.

“Attendance over the past two years shows that our largest crowds gather for the early evening festivities, a clear sign that families appreciate having a welcoming place to start their celebrations,” the staff memo states.

The updated event runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will include inflatables, face painting, interactive games, button-making, roaming and busker performances, a bonfire warming area and a variety of food trucks.

Live music is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m., with a headlining act slated for 7:50 to 8:55 p.m. The staff memo notes the performer will be finalized by Dec. 5. Local dignitaries will speak ahead of a single fireworks finale at 9 p.m., launched from Heritage Park.

The move marks a notable shift from last year’s festivities, which featured country artist Madeline Merlo as headliner, children’s performers Sonshine and Broccoli, local musician Kyle Wauchope and a midnight fireworks show. Staff say this year’s earlier format offers families “a welcoming place to start their celebrations,” adding those who wish to continue celebrations after 9 p.m. can visit downtown venues to carry on the night.

Transit and parking will follow an expanded schedule similar to previous years. Barrie Transit will be free starting at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, with all routes running until 3 a.m.

Downtown parking will be free after 5 p.m., including at the Collier Street Parkade. A road closure on Simcoe Street, from Bayfield to Dunlop/Mulcaster, will be in place from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.

City staff say the revised celebration is designed to support local businesses, reduce operational pressures, and provide a focused, family-friendly start to New Year’s Eve.
