A 23-year-old Barrie man is up for charges after York Regional Police recovered a stolen vehicle through an Automated Licence Plate Recognition alert in Aurora. Officers were on patrol near Yonge Street and Elm Grove Avenue last Thurs., June 4, when they received an in-car alert identifying a grey Ford Edge as stolen. Police say they monitored the vehicle while other units, like air support and canine units, moved in to assist. The suspect was arrested near St. John’s Sideroad and Industrial Parkway South. He has since been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, dangerous operation, two counts of breach of probation and three counts of operating a conveyance while prohibited. According to police, the Ford Edge had been reported stolen from Barrie the previous day. Investigators also allege the accused was on probation and prohibited from driving at the time of the incident. York Regional Police say this system, which was expanded to all frontline vehicles in 2022, automatically scans licence plates and helps officers track down stolen vehicles and other potential crime.
