Police say two men were arrested for impaired driving following two separate crashes outside Halifax last Thursday. The RCMP first responded to a report of a white SUV with roof racks in a ditch between a landfill and Sheet Harbour around 3 p.m. Officers patrolled the area and further west to Spry Bay but did not find the vehicle. Police received another report about an hour later of a white vehicle in a ditch near Boutilier’s Settlement Road in Spry Bay. Officers found a Jeep Grand Cherokee with roof racks in the ditch and the driver inside. Police say they spoke with the driver and he showed signs of impairment. He gave a roadside breath sample, which he allegedly failed. “The 20-year-old man from Fall River was arrested for impaired driving,” reads an RCMP news release. “He was transported to the Sheet Harbour RCMP Detachment, where he provided two breath samples registering 90 mg% each.” The man was released and will appear in Dartmouth provincial court at a later date. Police, fire and ambulance crews then responded to a crash in the 2000 block of Crowell Road in East Lawrencetown around 9:15 p.m. Officers found a Volkswagen GTI in a ditch with two injured passengers. Police say the vehicle appeared to have left the road and collided with a driveway culvert. “Officers learned that firefighters had located the driver leaving the scene and brought him back to the crash site,” the release reads. “While speaking with the driver, an officer observed signs of impairment.” Police say the driver, a 19-year-old man from Three Fathom Harbour, was arrested for impaired driving. The driver and two passengers, a 19-year-old man from Head of Chezzetcook and an 18-year-old man from Grand Desert, were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say a sample of the driver’s blood was taken at the hospital. It will be analyzed at a forensic lab to determine the blood alcohol concentration. The RCMP says the investigation is ongoing.
