The public transit system in western of Nova Scotia is set to receive $10 million for upgrades. The federal and provincial governments will spend the money to improve Tidal Transit services. Tidal Transit serves Kings, Annapolis and Digby counties as well as surrounding communities. The funds will be used to replace six aging buses with five new conventional buses and one new electric bus. The transit authority will also install three charging stations and upgrade their maintenance facility, including installing an emergency power backup system. Officials say the changes will support vulnerable people in the area by providing better access to employment, health care, education and social services. The mayor of the Municipality of the County of Kings calls it a “major win.” “This funding means new buses, improved infrastructure and more reliable service for the people who depend on public transit every day. It’s a significant investment in our community and in the future of rural transit,” says Dave Corkum. The federal government is spending $8 million in the project through the Rural Transit Solutions Fund, while the province is contributing $2 million.
