‘Substance of concern’ detected in Annapolis County drug supply, doesn’t respond to Narcan

Nova Scotia Health says a substance of concern has been detected in the Annapolis County, N.S., illegal drug supply.

Health Canada’s Drug Analysis Service (DAS) reportedly found ehtylflualprazolam after testing a sample that was seized by local law enforcement.

The report indicated the first detection of the substance in Nova Scotia’s unregulated drug supply.

Health authorities describe the drug as a white benzodiazepine. Toxicities from the drug can look like opioid toxicities but do not respond to naloxone. They urge residents to always call 911 and to perform CPR if naloxone is ineffective.

NS Health also reminds residents to “Let someone know, start low, and go slow,” meaning not to do drugs alone, start with a small amount and have naloxone ready.

They also advise avoiding mixing drugs, expect the unexpected and go to an overdose prevention site.
