N.S. RCMP says counterfeit $50 bank notes circulating in province

The Nova Scotia RCMP says they have seen an uptick in counterfeit $50 bank notes circulating in the province.

Police say they received at least eight separate reports of “high-quality counterfeit $50 bank notes” used to buy goods and services in Colchester, East Hants, West Hants, Kings and Lunenburg counties in the last month, according to a news release.

“These notes, which all have identical serial numbers, are made from a similar plastic to that used by genuine currency, and include a holographic sticker meant to imitate genuine embedded security measures,” the release reads. “The holographic stripe on the one side can be peeled off.”

Police encourage Nova Scotians to check bank notes to ensure they are legal tender. Tips on how to verify a bank note’s security features can be found on the Bank of Canada’s website.
