The Nova Scotia government is spending $120,000 to help plan and design an energy retrofit at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth. The multi-purpose facility, which opened in 2001, has already received $7 million for an expansion that is expected to be finished early next year. The renovation includes an aquatics centre and fitness facilities. The new investment will go towards the retrofit design, which will consider replacing heating and cooling equipment with higher efficiency units to lower energy costs. “Over the past few years, we’ve seen exciting improvements at Mariners Centre – from the splash park and accessible multi-sport court to the beautiful new aquatics and fitness centre now nearing completion,” said Mayor Pam Mood in a news release. “Now it’s time to reinvest in the arena to improve indoor air quality, modernize the ice plant and cut energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.” The Mariners Centre can hold up to 1,300 spectators for events.
