Nova Scotia African Heritage Month focusing on strength in unity

The official poster and theme of African Heritage Month are revealed in Cherry Brook, Nova Scotia.

The upcoming African Heritage Month in Nova Scotia is titled “Strength in Unity: Moving Forward with Purpose, Prosperity, Power and Progress.”

The month-long event runs through February, but it kicked off with an official proclamation at the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia in Cherry Brook on Tuesday.

“Strength in Unity: Moving Forward with Purpose, Prosperity, Power and Progress is a call to action,” said Twila Grosse, minster of African Nova Scotian Affairs, in a news release. “Unity has always been a source of strength for African Nova Scotians and people of African descent, sustaining us through generations of challenge and change.

“By honouring our elders and standing together, we create opportunities and shape a future where our leadership, culture and contributions are reflected in every part of this province.”

According to the province, the first Black History Month in Nova Scotia was observed in 1988. It was renamed African Heritage Month in 1996.
