3 staff members hospitalized after inmate assault at Springhill Institution: N.S. RCMP

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) says an investigation is underway after an inmate assaulted a number of staff members at the Springhill Institution in Springhill, N.S.

The RCMP says officers and EHS responded to a report of an assault with a weapon at the medium-security federal facility around 7:40 p.m. Sunday.

Police say three staff members were assaulted by an inmate while they were escorting the inmate back to their cell.

The three staff members were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

CSC says it has identified the inmate “and appropriate actions will be taken.” No details about the inmate have been released.

“The Correctional Service Canada (CSC) acknowledges the serious and inherent risks faced daily by our correctional staff,” said the CSC in a news release Tuesday.

“We extend our full support to the staff members injured while carrying out the challenging work of maintaining safety and security within our institutions.”

CSC says it’s reviewing the circumstances that led to the assault and will “take additional measures as necessary” to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The RCMP says it’s investigation is ongoing.
