Inclusive activity fair in Halifax connects kids with disabilities to sport

Halifax-area children living with disabilities were invited to get out and play at the Canada Games Centre this weekend.

The “Play Your Way Inclusive Activity Fair” focuses on reducing barriers to physical activity.

“It’s designed to help connect families with organizations that offer parasport, adaptive and inclusive programming,” said Lindsey Coughlan, a physiotherapist and community engagement manager with Halifax Kids Physio, which hosted the event.

Fifteen different vendors participated in the fair, offering different activities including wheelchair basketball, bocce ball, accessible games and a dance class.

Among those that took part was the AquaGO! program.

“We teach fundamental swimming skills as well as artistic swimming skills, we teach land skills such as flexibility and strength and it’s something that any athlete can enjoy whether they have a disability or not,” says instructor Mae Berube.

While some of the vendors were private companies, some were public programs, like Special Olympics.

“So it’s a mix of both. But most of the activities here are free for participants to join and try out,” says Coughlan.

Adrinna MacNamara says her daughter Isabella, who uses a wheelchair, was happy to attend.

“She was counting down the days to come. She was very excited to try out some new sports. I think it’s very important so everyone can see what’s open in the community for children with disabilities. It’s very nice to know what’s available,” says MacNamara.

Many of the programs will run for several weeks during the summer, so the fair is an opportunity for kids to see what they like, Coughlan says.

“This is also an opportunity for families to make sure that the organization can cater to the complex needs of their children and make sure that the program is really accessible for them,” she says.

Organizers hope to host the event every year to highlight programs in the Halifax Regional Municipality.
