Halifax councillor seeking report on making Argyle Street a permanent pedestrian zone

Argyle Street in downtown Halifax is a popular spot for pedestrians in the summer and a councillor wants to know how it could become a permanent spot for walkers and cyclists.

Coun. Laura White, who represents the Halifax South Downtown district, has put forward a motion asking the chief administrative officer to provide a staff report on how to concert Argyle Street from Prince and Blowers streets to a year-round pedestrian zone.

“The report shall indicate the recommended infrastructure and logistics required to provide a livable and safe experience for people in the area, and how to accommodate required vehicle loading access,” the motion reads.

Council will vote on the motion at their regular meeting on Tuesday.

Since 2015, the section of Argyle Street between Prince and Blowers streets has been closed to vehicle traffic from April to November. It started as a pilot project and has returned every summer.

The pedestrian-only zone is known for its restaurants and bars, along with the Halifax Convention Centre and Neptune Theatre.

The motion asks that the report consults with Downtown Halifax Business Commission members, businesses and residents on the street.

“Permanent infrastructure would increase the safety provided to attendees of local events and allow year-round events to be held without the added expense and logistics of closing the street,” the motion reads.

Argyle Street is currently closed to vehicle traffic and will reopen on Nov. 12.
