Cape Breton residents will need to pick up bills in person if Canada Post strike happens

The Canada Post strike could disrupt food bank donations and municipal bills for Cape Bretoners.

If Canada Post workers go on strike at midnight on Thursday, Cape Breton Regional Municipality residents will have to pick up their water and property tax bills in person or via email.

The municipality says the only means of bill distribution during a possible strike is in-person pickups at City Hall and via email upon request.

Residents can learn their account balances by calling 311 or visiting their website.

“Billing by area will continue as scheduled and residents are expected to pay their bills on time,” a news release reads. “Accounts not paid by the billing due date will be subject to interest charges.”

In-person bill payments can be made at the Citizen Service Centre at 320 Esplanade in Sydney from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. Monday to Friday. People can also visit any bank or credit union to pay at their local branch.

The municipality says residents can add Cape Breton Regional Municipality Water or Cape Breton Regional Municipality Tax as payees in their financial institution’s online banking platform.

People can also pay via credit card through Paymentus Corporation, which charges a convenience fee of 1.75 per cent.
