N.S. cheese company comes in first at agricultural fair

Crystal Garrett meets a local woman who recently picked up two big awards for her cheesy creations.

Annapolis Fine Cheese, barely two years into its cheesemaking journey, won two big awards at the Royal Winter Fair Cheese Competition in Toronto.

Their Truffle Fresh Cheese earned first place and their Herb and Garlic Fresh Cheese earned second in the flavoured cheese category. Head cheese maker Catherine Keeler says she felt honoured to be recognized at a national scale.

“There is excellent cheese being made in Canada so to be recognized in the top tier is a big honour,” said Keeler in an interview with Your Morning Atlantic’s Crystal Garrett.

“People have been really responsive to it. We always thought the products are good, but it’s really wonderful to get the recognition on a national scale and that Nova Scotia cheese is up there with the best.”

Annapolis Fine Cheese produces fines cheeses using 100 per cent Nova Scotia milk. It has quickly become a growing favourite among Nova Scotians.

“We get all of our milk from valley farms, and it comes in fresh everyday. To make good cheese you need excellent quality milk. We are very fortunate in Nova Scotia to have some of the best quality milk in Canada,” said Keeler.

The company has booths at the Wolfville Farmers’ Market and the Halifax Brewery Market, and its products are available at retailers across the province.
