The Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) is set to receive more accessible buses and transit upgrades after an announcement from officials in New Waterford, N.S., on Monday. The federal and provincial governments are providing a combined $2.6 million for the purchase of six accessible mini-buses, five bus shelters, five crosswalks and 1.75 kilometres of sidewalk. The Government of Nova Scotia has pledged $537,360 through Link Nova Scotia. The federal government is set to contribute $2.1 million in capital funding from the Rural Transit Solutions Fund. “Whether it’s getting to work, school, medical appointments, or simply staying connected to one another, dependable transit makes our community stronger,” says CBRM Mayor Cecil Clarke in a news release. “This investment helps ensure that every person in CBRM can count on safe, accessible ways to move around in our municipality.” John White, MLA for Glace Bay-Dominion, says the planned upgrades will bring safe and accessible transportation options for residents. “Public transit and community transportation services play a vital role in the lives of Nova Scotians,” he says in the release. “One that helps them maintain their independence and stay connected in the community they call home.” For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page
