Warm temperatures are bringing tourists back to Hartland, N.B., to cross the world’s largest covered bridge. But for six months this year, that wasn’t possible. The bridge was closed between January and June for repairs on the pedestrian walkway. Local resident Adekunle Adeniyi said its opening was welcome news and meant he could more conveniently cross the river. “We have so many people that are coming here. And it also gives me personally easy access to many places, very short and proximity,” he said. By Wednesday, the bridge was busy with tourists walking to each side. “It was cool to see the water, and it was a cool long tunnel, said Windsor resident Kara Volpatti. New York residents Andrew Herbert and Sue Tessier stopped to see the bridge on their trip to Halifax. “I don’t think we’ve visited many covered bridges before,” Tessier said. “We had to see the world’s longest. The world’s longest; that’s quite a claim.” The bridge’s 125th anniversary is this year, marking the perfect time for Ontario tourists Marie-Claude Boisvert and Anik Chevalier to visit the site. “We’re making memories, so this is great We love history, so this is excellent,” Chevalier said.
