Starting Tuesday, NB Power customers who opted out of smart meters will have an extra $4.65 added to their monthly bill. “These fees reflect the additional costs associated with maintaining manual meter reading and supporting a separate metering system for a relatively small number of customers,” NB Power spokesperson Elizabeth Fraser-McAllister said in an emailed statement. Around 14,800 customers don’t have smart meters, a minority of the corporation’s over 400,000 direct and indirect customers. Some residents have raised concerns about the meters’ accuracy and safety. “NB Power will continue to provide customers with fact-based information about the smart meter program and the benefits it delivers for customers and the electricity system as a whole,” Fraser-McAllister said.
