Tanker truck crash that caused N.B. highway closure, fuel spill caught on video

New Brunswick officials provided an update on a highway tanker rollover.

Video has been posted online that shows the moment a double-long tanker rolled over on a highway in southern New Brunswick last week, causing a large fuel spill.

The footage, obtained by CTV News Atlantic, shows the seconds leading up to and the crash itself on Route 1 near Nauwigewauk last Wednesday.

The eastbound lanes of the highway were still closed as of Monday afternoon.

The province’s Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) says an estimated 36,000 litres of fuel spilled.

Charbel Awad, deputy minister of Environment and Local Government, said Seaboard Liquid Carriers has deemed to be the responsible party and they will be on the hook for the remediation work bill.

The closure is to allow workers to safely clear the site, the agency said in a Sunday evening update on social media.

“We’re well on our way in regards to cleaning the immediate impacted areas,” Awad said. “All the mitigations are in place to avoid anything getting worse or going further.

“They have underflow dams and boons in the waterways so that it’s not leaking away from the site. They have been doing some soil removal in the median and on site and those are being sent to areas for it to be cleaned up or cleaned out.”

A detour remains in effect for eastbound traffic.

Police closed Route 1 at kilometre marker 152, between Hampton and Quispamsis, in both directions following the crash.

The westbound lane of the highway opened on Friday.

“I believe we visited ten houses that were in the potentially impacted space,” said Awad.

He notes that wells in the area will be monitored to see how they’ll be impacted by the spill. No timeline was given for those test results.

There is no word on the cause of the crash or the extent of any environmental damage. An investigation is ongoing.
