Experts confirm pair of tornadoes near Yorkton on June 28

Two weak tornadoes are confirmed to have touched down in the Parkland region on Sunday, according to the Northern Tornadoes Project.

The first tornado was reported on Sunday afternoon near Stornoway, Sask. It was given a rating of EF-0 and no damages were reported.

A second tornado touched down just over the Manitoba border near Lake of the Prairies later that evening. That tornado was given a rating of EF-1, with damages to trees, grain bins, and outbuildings at a farmyard in the area.

It had an estimated max windspeed of 150 km/h and was on the ground for about nine kilometres.

A potential tornado near Pelly, Sask. the same day remains under investigation, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

“The day was pretty crazy. There was multiple things going on, there’s flooding, tornadoes, hail, you name it,” Kyle Ziolowski, a meteorologist with ECCC, told CTV News on Friday.

“The damage in Pelly is complex … so it’s still being investigated, so nothing officially confirmed yet.”

Ziolowski said if there was a tornado in the storm, it was completely rain wrapped and could not be seen visually.

“There is damage and we did see video of storm rotation,” he said. “The only thing you can see is like the rain curtains wrapping around the circulation, and so that’s what’s making this one a little bit tougher, kind of fully confirmed and why it’s needing kind of a deeper investigation.”

A NTP team has been trying to access the site but their efforts have been hindered by flooding in the area.
