Over $800K in contraband, unauthorized items seized from Dorchester, N.B. prison

Contraband and unauthorized items were seized at Dorchester Penitentiary, a medium security unit in New Brunswick.

Staff members seized multiple packages containing contraband and unauthorized items on the perimeter of the penitentiary between Sept. 13 and Sept. 14, according to a news release from Correctional Service Canada (CSC).

The CSC said a package was dropped by a drone, however, the drone was not seized.

The second package remains under investigation.

The items seized included:

• cannabis
• tobacco
• methamphetamine
• psilocybin
• cocaine
• nicotine patches
• cell phone accessories

The estimated value of the items seized is $805,600.

The CSC said it uses tools such as ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates and visitors.

CSC has also set up a telephone tip line for all federal institutions to receive information about any activities relating to security at CSC institutions. Those with information relating to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates and staff members working at CSC institutions can call 1-866-780-3784.

No institutional charges were laid against the Dorchester Penitentiary.
