New Brunswick has hired more than 400 nurses, 80 physicians in last year

New Brunswick’s regional health authorities have hired more than 400 nurses and more than 80 permanent physicians in the last year.

The province says the retention and recruitment trends at Horizon Health Horizon and Vitalité Health Network have improved since October 2024, resulting in net increases of 84 physicians, 214 registered nurses and 201 licensed nurses.

“Our health-care workers are the backbone of the health-care system, and we are tackling shortages, supporting recruitment and retention efforts, and creating workplaces where people feel respected, valued and safe,” said Health Minister John Dornan in a news release. “I am pleased that the regional health authorities are making strides in recruiting physicians, nurses and allied health professionals. We will continue to work together to ensure we have a strong and sustainable health-care system that cares for New Brunswickers, now and in the future.”

Next month the province is hosting a first-of-its-kind summit focused on strengthening the health-care and long-term care systems.
