N.B. government introduces bill to enhance chief medical officer’s independence

The New Brunswick government says it is seeking to enhance the independence of the province’s chief medical officer of health with a new bill.

The proposed “Act to Amend the Public Health Act” would, if passed, allow the lieutenant-governor in council to appoint the chief medical officer. The lieutenant-governor could also remove the officers, but only for cause, according to a news release from the province.

According to the current Public Health Act, the Health minister appoints the chief medical officer.

The proposal would also require government officials who direct the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health to provide those instructions in writing, which the officer could then publish in the Royal Gazette at their discretion.

“We committed to transparency being a priority for our government, and this is one way we are making good on that commitment,” said Health Minister John Dornan in the release. “This measure shows we’re serious about accountability and making sure public health decisions are made in the open.”
