The New Brunswick government is giving Mount Allison University $3 million towards a new multi-sport complex in Tantramar. The facility is set to serve the 2,400 students at the university as well as the 14,500 residents of the Tantramar area. “By giving students and families in Tantramar a place to stay active, we’re helping prevent illness, support mental health and take pressure off our health-care system. This is an investment in people – and in a healthier New Brunswick,” said Post-Secondary Education and Training Minister Jean-Claude D’Amours in the news release Tuesday. The new sports complex comes with a $30-million price tag and will feature a 26,000 square-foot playing surface, a walking track, multiple configurations for courts and a multi-purpose space. “Mount Allison is grateful for the Province of New Brunswick’s support for this important project,” said university president and vice-chancellor Ian Sutherland. “Our new multi-sport complex is an investment in the health, well-being and future of students, our university, and the broader Tantramar community. It will create a dynamic, accessible space that supports varsity and recreational athletics, strengthens community connections, and serves the region for generations to come.” The facility is expected to open in 2030.
