An iconic sports editor and humanitarian from Moncton, N.B., passed away on Saturday at the age of 93. Eddie “The Saint” St. Pierre was a baseball player, sportswriter for the Moncton Daily Times and prolific humanitarian. St. Pierre joined the Times in 1950 when he was 17 years old. By 1956, he was the sports editor of the paper. He held the position until 1992. In 2022, he was a recipient of the Order of Moncton, the city’s highest honour. “Eddie St. Pierre no doubt inspired many young would-be reporters in the ensuing years,” the city wrote upon his induction. “From his popular ‘Once Over Lightly’ column to his many dealings with local sports stars such as Yvon Durelle, to international names like Wayne Gretzky, Bobbie Orr and Jean Beliveau, he entertained and informed his readers.” After retiring, he volunteered with the Kidney Foundation of Canada, Moncton Headstart, CNIB, the Greater Moncton Down Syndrome Society, the Special Olympics and more. In a social media post expressing condolences for St. Pierre’s passing, the city refers to him as “a Moncton legend.” St. Pierre was a husband, father, and has several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
