‘Complex housing needs’: New Brunswick tackles Moncton homelessness with new units

New supportive housing units are set to open in Moncton, N.B., for people who are homeless.

Located at the site of the former Go Motel on Main Street, there will be 14 new units managed by the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick.

“This project will help us respond to the complex housing needs in our community and allow residents to work through any challenges in their lives in a safe, affordable setting,” says Debbie MacInnis, CEO of the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick, in a news release from the province.

The New Brunswick Housing Corporation spent $772,659 in support of the project.

David Hickey, the minister responsible for the corporation, says the Greater Moncton area has the highest need for this kind of housing in the province.

“These units will help people find stability and work towards a brighter future,” he says in the release.

According to the Human Development Council, there were 778 people experiencing homeless for at least one day in Moncton for the month of April.

This amount is significantly higher than in other New Brunswick cities, like Saint John with 478 individuals and Fredericton with 272.

Last summer, the organization showed a 210 per cent increase in homelessness across the three cities since 2021.

Then in September 2025, the housing corporation received $7.4 million in emergency funding for supportive housing projects.

The first one to open was a 27-unit development on Forest Hill Road in Fredericton in January.

More supportive housing units have been announced and opened since then, including some in Bathurst and Salisbury.

Once the 14 units in Moncton are ready, the government says it will have opened 101 new supportive units since last fall, with another 49 units still in progress.

Additional projects are still being finalized.
